super strange new year traditions!
First of all, I want to greet you all a happy new year!!! Here in the Philippines, it’s currently 2 in the afternoon and i’m sure in some parts of the country, 2012 is just starting. Crazy timezones, huh? But if you were to ask me, some of these traditions being celebrated in other parts of the world are crazier… but believe it or not, they’re true
It’s all about the circles – Philippines
Yes, here in our country we have this belief that we should wear something with circular patterns or give importance to round fruits on the dining table. Why? We believe that this will bring more money for the rest of the year. Yipee! Hehe.
Graveyard visiting – Chile
Some Chileans visit the grave and wait for the new year to arrive with the deceased. Kinda creepy, don’t you think? But I guess it’s already been part of their tradition for several decades now!
Wearing of yellow underwear – Bolivia
It’s all about luck for people in Bolivia – they buy yellow underwear and when the clock strikes 12, they run to a place to change their underwear and they believe that this will bring luck in their life!
Love through red underwear – Mexico
Mexicans also wear yellow underwear for luck just like those in Bolivia, but if they seek love, they have to wear red underwear.
Burning photos – Ecuador
For people in Ecuador, they burn photos that remind them of the past to get rid of it.
Other strange traditions can be found here. I’m not sure if these are really being done in the countries that were mentioned but it’s pretty cool to find out that it’s not only in the Philippines that we do strange things every new year’s eve
Happy 2012, guys!
